AI Pioneers
The computer scientists and mathematicians who founded artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence was not built by one person. It was built by a small community of mathematicians, computer scientists, and logicians who, starting in the 1950s, argued that machines could be made to simulate the things we call intelligent when a person does them.
The most commonly cited "father of AI" is John McCarthy, who coined the term and organized the founding conference. But every person on this list made essential contributions without which the field would not exist.

- Alan Turing
- Proposed the Turing test, foundational work in computation and logic.
- Marvin Minsky
- Co-organized Dartmouth, pioneered neural networks and computational geometry.
- Herbert Simon
- Nobel laureate, predicted AI would beat world chess champion by 1967.
- Allen Newell
- Created the Logic Theorist, one of the first AI programs.
- Geoffrey Hinton
- "Godfather of Deep Learning," pioneered backpropagation.
- Yoshua Bengio
- Turing Award winner, foundational work on deep learning and neural language models.
- Yann LeCun
- Turing Award winner, pioneer of convolutional neural networks.
