  • He named the field. The phrase "artificial intelligence" was McCarthy's. He wrote it down in 1955 in the proposal for a summer research project, choosing the words deliberately to mark off the new effort from neighboring fields like cybernetics and automata theory.
  • He founded the field. The 1956 Dartmouth conference, which McCarthy organized, is widely recognized as the moment artificial intelligence became a formal research discipline with a name, a community, and an agenda.
  • He created its tools. McCarthy designed LISP in 1958, which became the dominant programming language for AI research for decades and introduced concepts like garbage collection that nearly every modern language now uses.
  • He championed the idea. McCarthy spent his career arguing that intelligence could be studied formally and reproduced mechanically — a position that was controversial in the 1950s and remains debated today.

Who coined the term Artificial Intelligence?

John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1955. He used it in the proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, a two-month workshop to be held the following summer at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The proposal advanced a claim that still sets the terms of the debate: "Every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it."

McCarthy chose the name partly for territorial reasons — he wanted to distinguish the new effort from cybernetics and automata theory — but the deeper point was ambition. The name did not describe a technique; it named a goal.

In the summer of 1956, McCarthy convened the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence alongside Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon. The two-month workshop brought together mathematicians, computer scientists, and logicians to explore whether machines could be made to simulate every aspect of learning and intelligence.

The conference is now remembered as the founding event of AI as a field. John McCarthy's contributions to AI

LISP programming language

In 1958, McCarthy designed LISP (from "LISt Processor"), described in a now-famous 1960 paper. For decades afterward, LISP was simply the language artificial intelligence was written in. Its key innovations included:

  • Programs and data share the same list structure, allowing programs to build and transform other programs as easily as ordinary data.
  • Automatic memory management through garbage collection — an idea McCarthy introduced that nearly every modern language now takes for granted.
  • Recursion and symbolic expression manipulation as first-class features built into the language.

Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

McCarthy founded and led the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), which became one of the world's leading AI research centers. Before Stanford, he had also helped start the AI lab at MIT.

Formal logic and commonsense reasoning
