What Is a Deepfake?

A deepfake is AI-generated or AI-altered media — usually video or audio — that convincingly depicts a real person saying or doing something they never did. Made possible by generative models, deepfakes have legitimate uses in film and accessibility but also enable fraud, harassment, and disinformation, making detection and provenance important.
