What Is a Diffusion Model?

A diffusion model generates images by learning to reverse a process of adding noise: starting from random static, it repeatedly refines the image toward a coherent result that matches a prompt. Diffusion is the technique behind popular image generators such as Stable Diffusion and DALL·E, and it has been extended to audio and video.
