What Was an AI Winter?

An “AI winter” is a period when enthusiasm and funding for AI collapsed after the technology failed to meet inflated expectations. There were two major winters — after the brittle symbolic systems of the 1970s and the expert-systems bust of the late 1980s. The pattern of hype followed by retreat is a recurring theme in AI’s history.
