What Were Expert Systems?

Expert systems were AI programs, prominent in the 1980s, that captured a specialist’s knowledge as large libraries of if–then rules to make decisions in narrow domains like medical diagnosis or equipment configuration. They were AI’s first big commercial success, but were costly to maintain and could not learn, and their market collapse brought a second AI winter.
