What Is the LISP Programming Language?

LISP (from “LISt Processor”) is a programming language designed by John McCarthy in 1958. It introduced ideas — programs as data, automatic memory management, and recursion — that were novel then and standard now, and it was the dominant language of AI research for decades, especially for symbolic reasoning.
