What Are AI Agents?

AI agents are systems that pursue a goal by planning and taking a sequence of actions, often calling external tools, browsing, or writing and running code with some autonomy. Built on top of language models, agents aim to complete multi-step tasks rather than answer a single prompt, and they are a major focus of current research and products.
